Local places of interest and outdoor activities
There are a vast number of excellent nearby attractions that can be combined with a cave visit for a perfect weekend stay.
The area round White Scar Cave is rich in beautiful landscapes, natural features and visitor attractions. The cave is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Scenery
The cave lies under Ingleborough hill, one of the “three peaks” in the area. The other two are Whernside and Pen-y-ghent. Ingleborough Cave and Nature Trail are at the nearby village of Clapham.
Ingleton is one mile from White Scar Cave, and has a spectacular waterfalls trail. Nearby is the village of Thornton in Lonsdale with its peaceful old church. Four miles north of the cave is the massive Ribblehead Viaduct on the Settle to Carlisle railway.
Near the market town of Settle (7 miles) is the huge limestone cliff at Malham Cove. Further east, just beyond Grassington, are Stump Cross Caverns.
Visitor attractions
There is plenty to see and do in North Yorkshire. 8 miles from the cave is Hawes, with its Dales countryside museum and traditional ropemakers. Near Hawes is the ancient hill village of Dent.
The historic town of Skipton is 14 miles away, with its castle and street market held 4 days a week. Further east near Ripon are the ruins of Fountains Abbey, and Lightwater Valley theme park.
Walking
The Three Peaks Walk takes in Pen–y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. The complete circular walk covers 25 miles. Guided walks in the Yorkshire Dales are organised by Curlew.
